Luke 10:17-20,
English Standard Version

The Return of the Seventy-Two

17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Here in verses 17 and 20, we see an interesting interaction between Jesus and the 72 who were sent out to evangelize and heal. Their mission of the 72 was uniquely different because they had no restrictions, when compared to when Jesus sent out the Apostles. The Apostles were told that they should minister solely to Jews. This mission brought them surprise at the power of God, as it says they “returned with joy.” They were able to control even demons!

Then Jesus hits them with an enormous and vivid truth bomb: He saw Satan fall like lightning from Heaven. Jesus then tells them that they have been given authority to trample the legion of the enemy, and that nothing would hurt them. He then tells the 72 that they should not rejoice and be happy that they are able to command and wield such power, but that they received the authority through their faith, which also gained them their names written into the Lamb’s Book of Life.

God bless you today.
